Coronavirus Is Forcing Companies to Suspend Dividends and Cancel Stock Buybacks

Financial stocks take a broad beating as Fed's 'aggressive' action sends Treasury yields tumbing

Financial stocks took a broad beating Monday, with shares of the largest players falling to multi-year lows, as the Federal Reserve's "aggressive action" to help support the financial markets sets Treasury yields tumbling. The SPDR Financial Select Sector ETF dropped 4.7% towared a 4-year low, with 87 of 90 equity components losing ground. Among the ETF's (XLF) most heavily weighted components, shares of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. slumped 5.1% toward a 3 1/2-year low; Bank of America Corp. slid 7.3% toward a 3 1/2-year low; Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. shed 5.2% toward a 3-year low; Citigroup Inc. fell 7.8% toward a 4-year low; and Wells Fargo & Co. took a 3.1% hit to an 8 1/2-year low. Meanwhile, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell 18.3 basis points to 0.755% it would buy an unlimited amount of Treasurys needed to ward off a credit crunch. Lower Treasury note yields could hurt bank earnings, as it could narrow the spread between what they earn on longer-term assets, such as loans, that are funded by short-term liabilities. The XLF has lost 41.5% over the past three months, while the S&P 500 has declined 30.5%.

Starting this year, banks had to adopt a new accounting standard, Current Expected Credit Losses, which forces them project loan losses at the time of origination. There may be a bright side: The Fed’s purchases of corporate bonds could be factored into the bank’s loan loss provisions.

Exxon Mobil debt cut by S&P on cash-flow concerns

7073彩票注册S&P Global Ratings on Monday lowered its ratings on Exxon Mobil Corp. debt, saying the oil giant's cash flow has fallen "well below" expectations the ratings agency had for the company. With "lower oil and natural gas prices, low refining margins and weak chemicals demand anticipated over the next two years, we expect measures to remain weak without a significant change in the company's financial plans," S&P said Monday. The credit rating was lowered one notch to AA from AA+. The negative outlook "reflects the potential for a further downgrade if the company does not take adequate steps to improve cash flows and leverage over the next 12 to 24 months," S&P said. Shares of Exxon have fallen 56% in the past 12 months, compared with declines of 24% and 26% for the S&P 500 index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average . The company's most-active bonds, the 3.095% notes that mature in August 2049, were recently trading at 93.876 cents on the dollar, at a yield spread of 199 basis points over U.S. treasurys and 17 basis points wider on the day. The notes were the second most active investment trade bond of the day, according to Marketaxess, after a Bank of America Corp. bond.
