JetBlue to cut capacity in April and May by at least 40%, cut costs and exec pay over coronavirus

7073彩票注册JetBlue Airways Corp. said Wednesday it will cut capacity in April and May by at least 40% and announced another round of cost cuts and savings as the airline industry struggles with a massive reduction in flights as consumers hunker down to avoid spreading COVID-19. The airline said it was taking in about $22 million a day last March on a typical day, but that has shrunk to about $4 million while the company is also issuing about $20 million a day in credits to customers for canceled flights. "Even though we entered this from a position of strength with a strong balance sheet and cash in the bank, because of the dramatic fall-off in bookings, we need to reduce our spending immediately so that we can continue to fund JetBlue's operations and ensure your jobs are protected," the airline said in a statement. "We have already announced an initial capacity reduction, pay cuts for our officers (VPs and above), voluntary time off programs, re-negotiated Business Partners agreements, and other spending reductions." Chief Executive Robin Hayes and Chief Operating Officer Joanna Geraghty have both taken 50% pay cuts and the airline is slowing new plane deliveries and prepayments. The company has also agreed to a new $1 billion credit facility. Shares were down 8% premarket but have lost 43% in the last 12 months, while the S&P 500 has lost 11%.

Airline stocks suffer another broad selloff after expanded travel ban, as recession fears grow

7073彩票注册Airline stocks tumbled toward fresh lows in premarket trading Monday, after the U.S. expanded its travel ban to the U.K. and Ireland and amid growing fears of a global recession as COVID-19 spreads. United Airlines Holdings Inc.'s stock tumbled 17.7%, after the air carrier said late Sunday that it expects March revenue to be $1.5 billion lower than a year ago. Shares of American Airlines Group Inc. plunged 20.5%, Delta Air Lines Inc. dropped 15.1%, Southwest Airlines Co. lost 12.8% and JetBlue Airways Corp. shed 13.4%. The U.S. Global Jets ETF tumbled 12.1% ahead of the open. The ETF has declined 41.9% over the past month through Friday, while the S&P 500 has fallen 19.8%. J.P. Morgan analyst Jamie Baker cut price targets on airline stocks, saying he believes the collapse in air travel demand "has the potential to materially reshape global aviation, meaningfully more than the events of 9/11."
