Buy Netflix as People Stay Home, Analyst Says

Baird analyst says that the lack of live sports could accelerate cord-cutting — with the streaming service as a beneficiary.

Netflix stock surges after Baird upgrade

Netflix Inc. shares are up nearly 9% in Monday trading after Baird analyst William Power upgraded the stock to outperform from neutral, writing that the company was likely to be a "key beneficiary" of the COVID-19 outbreak, which has forced the cancellation of live sporting events. "Netflix's view that it continues to take share from linear TV never looked truer," Power wrote. "While not surprising given COVID-19 impacts, our survey results and other checks suggest strong current subscriber trends. Whereas we had previously been concerned with pricing power due to new entrants like Disney , Apple , etc., we believe the narrative could shift towards greater revenue leverage from subscriber upside." Power upped his price target on the stock to $415 from $350 in conjunction with the upgrade. Other stay-at-home stocks, including those of videogame publishers Activision Blizzard Inc. , Electronic Arts Inc. , and Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. as well as streaming pure-play Roku Inc. , are also up sharply in Monday's session. Netflix's stock has lost 4.7% over the past month as the S&P 500 has dropped 31%.

Netflix's Ted Sarandos says coronavirus-related shutdown won't disrupt content, for now at least

Netflix Inc. Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said Sunday that while the coronavirus outbreak has been a "massive disruption" to production, he doesn't expect any shortage of content in the coming months. During an interview on CNN, Sarandos said "every one of our productions around the world are shut down" due to the pandemic, and the streaming service is making efforts to make sure production professionals are still paid during the shutdown. Sarandos said "viewing is up" as millions of people stay home to avoid spreading the COVID-19 illness. But while Netflix has plenty of new shows in its pipeline, he said an extended shutdown could affect new releases later this year. "We're pretty far ahead, so we don't see any disruption in our output over the next few months," he said. "You know, maybe later in the year, if this progresses long, you'll start feeling some of that as the physical production is not operating."

EU urges Netflix, other streaming services to cease showing HD content to prevent internet outages

7073彩票注册A spike in internet home usage because of the COVID-19 outbreak has prompted the European Union to ask Netflix Inc. and other streaming platforms to stop showing HD content to prevent internet outages. European Commissioner Thierry Breton, who oversees the EU internal market covering more than 450 million people, late Wednesday tweeted that he spoke with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. Breton's fear is that with hundreds of millions of people either working from home, and with children out of school, the internet may break down under the strain.
